N8CIR Summer Internship Programme 2025
Submit Your Project Idea
Do you have an innovative 8-week project that could benefit from Research Software Engineering (RSE) expertise? Are you passionate about mentoring penultimate or final-year undergraduates to inspire future RSE careers? The N8CIR Summer Internship Programme offers a unique opportunity to advance your research while nurturing early-career talent.
We are now inviting proposals for projects commencing on 23rd June 2025. Selected initiatives will receive dedicated support from our Research Computing Team, including an RSE co-PI and advisory guidance, enabling interns to tackle real-world challenges aligned with N8CIR themes: Digital Health, Digital Humanities, and Machine Learning.
To help you draft your proposal, we’ve prepared three resources:
- What is an RSE?: Explore the role of RSEs and discover potential project ideas.
- Our Consulting Catalogue: Learn how our team can support your research.
- Case Studies: See examples of real-world projects we’ve supported.
Apply here: Proposal Submission Form
Deadline for this call: 23:59pm Sunday 13th April 2025
Why Propose a Project?
- RSE Partnership: Each project will be co-led by an expert RSE from our team, ensuring robust technical oversight.
- Research Enhancement: Benefit from RSE expertise to improve the quality, efficiency, and impact of your research outputs.
- Capacity Building: Help shape the next generation of RSEs by providing hands-on experience in applying research software engineering techniques to real research challenges.
- Test Our Consulting Service: This is an excellent opportunity to experience the consulting services our Research Computing Team offers, with the potential for future collaboration.
- Funding: We will fund at least two interns (0.8 FTE, 8 weeks at the Grade 3/Spine Point 11), with the potential for a third position pending additional funding.
Project eligibility criteria
- Led by a Leeds-based academic.
- Align with at least one N8CIR theme: Digital Health, Digital Humanities, and Machine Learning.
- Feasible for an undergraduate to complete in 8 weeks, with a clear scope for skill development.
- Focus on training: Proposals must outline how the intern will grow through applying RSE methodologies to research problems.
Submission Process
- Submit your proposal via Project Proposal Form by 23:59, Sunday 13th April 2025.
- Proposals will be reviewed against eligibility criteria by 18th April 2025.
- Approved projects will be shared with interns for selection (28th–29th April), with RSE co-PIs assigned by 29th April.
- Final decisions communicated to PIs by 30th April 2025 and to the N8CIR committee by 2nd May 2025.
If Your Project Isn’t Selected
The N8CIR Summer Internship Programme is shared among all N8CIR universities. If a position is not filled in one university it can be allocated to another. N8CIR is also seeking funding to offer a third position to each university, so projects not initially chosen could still be selected in May 2025
