This is a basic introduction to using the Linux command line and navigating Linux file structures. The Linux command line is the main method of accessing HPC resources at the University of Leeds and further afield, and this course lays down the basic groundwork needed. No previous experience of Linux or command line is required. In this course, we cover:
Course content
This course includes practical exercises and hands-on coding that you will be guided through. Note that this course does not include guidance on submitting jobs to HPC systems, please see HPC1: Introduction to High-Performance Computing for information on this topic.
- Filesystem structure on Linux systems;
- Basic useful commands for navigating filesystems and managing and modifying folders and files;
- How to run scripts from the command line.
Suitability
Research postgraduate students and staff from all faculties and research domains who are new HPC users; absolute beginners to the Linux command line
Prerequisites
- This course uses a virtual Linux machine in the cloud, so no specialised software is required to be installed/downloaded.
- If attending an online iteration of this course, we recommend using a second screen so that you can follow along easily during the practical sections.
