Jo Kershaw
Area of expertise
Philosophy, Fluid Dynamics, Astrophysics
Jo joined the Research Computing Team in January 2026. After a degree in Philosophy, she worked at the Wellcome Sanger Institute in Cambridge on the Human Genome Project, contributing to large-scale genome sequencing and analysis, before moving into education alongside part-time study with the Open University.
Her postgraduate research at the University of Leeds, within the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Fluid Dynamics, focused on the development and analysis of numerical models of rotating convection in spherical and cylindrical geometries, using spectral-element and pseudo-spectral methods to investigate heat transfer and flow dynamics in geophysical and astrophysical systems, and exploring how targeted simplifications can extend physical predictions beyond the limits of direct numerical simulation.
Jo is proficient in Fortran and Python and has practical experience working with large simulation datasets on HPC systems. Her interests include astrophysical systems, numerical methods, scientific software development, and machine learning applications in physical modelling.
