We are now welcoming applications for one of four N8 Digital Research Internships we’ll be hosting this summer, offering a range of exciting 8‑week research computing projects to choose from.

These paid internships are open to undergraduate students from any discipline who are curious about computing, digital research methods, high‑performance computing, AI, or how software and data underpin modern research across all fields.

About the Research Computing team

The Research Computing team, part of Research IT, works with researchers across the University to deliver digital solutions that support advanced, data‑intensive, and computationally complex research. Our Research Software Engineers (RSEs) design software, build HPC workflows, apply AI methods, and help researchers turn ideas into reliable tools, analyses, and insights.

As an intern, you’ll join our consulting service, gaining not only technical experience but also valuable exposure to consulting work. You’ll work with real stakeholders to shape project requirements, plan and organise your tasks, and communicate progress throughout — developing a strong set of transferable consulting and project‑management skills.

You’ll also connect with RSE groups across the north of England through the N8 Centre of Excellence in Computationally Intensive Research, and have the chance to showcase your project at the September closing event, giving you valuable experience in presenting your work to a wider research audience.

What’s on offer?

We have a selection of exciting interdisciplinary projects — spanning computational humanities, explainable AI, biomechanics, historical linguistics, and HPC‑driven workflows — and you’ll be able to choose the project that most interests you.

You can view the full list of proposed projects for this year on the N8 CIR website.
Each project page also includes the lead supervisor’s details, and we encourage prospective applicants to get in touch with them.

If you’d like to see what our digital research interns have achieved in previous years, take a look at these examples of past projects.

Together, these give you a sense of both the opportunities available this year and the kinds of research outcomes our digital research internships support.
